By now most of the pop culture landscape is feeling the aftershock of the internet breaking, summer music video "Apeshit". And I Loooooooove it!
Made by Beyonce (Queen B), and Jay-z, the music video does not hold back from showing the most prestigious art works that are homed in the Louvre; upon which the music video is filmed inside of. What are the major art impacts? What kinds of feelings are given by the music video? What does this artist think and feel about this work of art?
First of all, let me just say here and now that CLASSICALWAVE is crashing in like a huge wall of water on an unsuspecting coastal village. Sweeping in through the mainstream thanks to my heroes: B and J, classical art is finding a strong foot hold in our new digital age world.
My favorite image is of Beyonce and Jay-z standing in front of the Mona Lisa. As Mona Lisa stares at us with her dominatrix eyes from the classic era. Standing in front of her are two figures: Beyonce and Jay-Z who are dressed in pastel clothes which reminds me of the rococo art movement. A rainbow colored pastel world is where the very wealthy of human beings naturally gravitate towards. With all that money, power and talent why not deck oneself in pastels and jewelry? Pastels are the universal indicator of a feel good time.
Much of the sensational imagery in the music videos gives thanks to the Renaissance fascination with humanism. "Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively." Human bodies make their dynamic debut as the music video is filled with dancing bodies against the backdrop of frozen paintings and sculptures. Never have I encountered such a work that incorporates visual imagery and dance into the classical genre of humanism.
The last shot we see B and J turn away from the camera/viewers and towards each other. Then finally they look back at my girl Mona Lisa. This gesture is what I believe is a humble respect for great master artists and art. To appreciate the arts is to find value in life. The great cosmic consciousness can be find in great works of art. Honor, reverence and respect must be given to paintings, sculptures and now musicians. What a beautiful moment from two very beautiful souls the art world now has.
