This is my first time watching Steven Spielberg's’ E.T. Extra Terrestrial. Is it possible to have nostalgia for a time that existed before I was eve born. Yes, why not? I wanted to watch a movie that gave me the same vibes as Netflix’s Stranger Things. Although I know that E.T. is a inspiration to the Netflix show. Great art is art that influences future generations artist. So, here we go..
The movie starts with a shiny, space ship in the deep dark forest at night. The darkness shrouds my feelings with mystery. Who are these aliens? Where do they come from? Why are they here? So many questions in the begging of a movie is always a great sign of a great story. I’m immediately sucked in.
The space ship’s door is open and we see space aliens walking through the forest. They must be explorers. I mean who wouldn’t want to explore new worlds if one had a spaceship. Although I’d recommend they explore the Vatican museum instead of mossy, old forest, but whatever nature still has it’s treasures.
A long fingered, alien hand reaches up and touches the branches of a pine tree. They must be here for the nature. We see a collection of plants from inside of the spaceship. The aliens are collecting plants for themselves. No wonder they didn’t end up in the Vatican museum, these aliens must be pagans of nature.
Red hearts glow from inside the aliens and they pause. This must be how they communicate. Communication is key even if you are butt ugly aliens from space. Once the red heart light stops the aliens start walking again. A hands picks a small earth tree from the ground, possibly to add to their jungle collection.
We see an alien, possible our E.T., walking in the misty forest. Suddenly we both discover a large cityscape full of glittering lights in the distance. Civilization compared to nature. What a world.
Oh my god, suddenly a very loud car drives up. Startling the alien and me too. Multiple cars begin to arrive on the scene. The men are here. E.T. hides in the grass. From the space ship we see an alien at the doors calling with it's red, glowing heart. The men hear something in the forest, they hear E.t.. And so the chase begins between man and alien. How intense!
The red heart of the alien glows as he screams and runs towards the spaceship through the forest. All we see of the Man is his crotch. He runs with his keys and flashlight with his crotch directly pointing at us. I feel slightly erotic, but that’s probably just me.
The man run until they see the space ship fly away from earth. Our little explorer E.T. has been left alone on Earth. The men stare into the night sky shocked by what they’ve seen. The last shot we see of our E.T. is of him walking towards the city. Towards civilization. Followed by men searching with their flashlights. That’s the excellent beginning of the movie.
