Stranger Things is about the horror of nature. In the show, again and again, we are all confronted by the slimey beasts that seem to come out of our wildest imaginations. But what exactly are these monsters? I believe they are representative of our own animal nature.
A long time ago, In the epic process of evolution, we were once lizard like animals. We had only violent and sexual thoughts of the most extreme and natural kind. Mother nature is the sexiest and craziest of us all. As we evolved into modern humans the lizard brain fell back and the frontal cortex developed. This frontal cortex gave us the ability to reason and use logic. But the truth is, is that we still have that lizard brain sitting deep in the back. The lizard brain snaps back at us with it's deep dark tounge. This idea was given to me by Camille Paglia who got it from Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud.
And so when I watch stranger things I can see the upside down and it's monsters as the subconscious or the lizard brain. The lizard brain has in it stored memories of nature that are yet to be fully understood. It is through the power of art that we can glimpse into this hidden world of our own animal nature.
In the third season the character Billy Hardgrove is a good example of what happens when man lets the lizard brain have too much power. Billy is a very sexual and violent man, these two things are what the lizard brain wants the most and Billy seeks these things like the animal he is. On his way to have sex with Mrs. Wheeler in a motel, Billy is attacked by a monster from the upside down. Is this symbolic of when we let our animal nature have too much power over us? Yes, of course it is. In the attack the monster sticks it's slimy organ all over Billy and turns him into a zombie. Billy becomes totally incapable of rational thought now. What is his ultimately mission? Just like sex and procreation, Zombie Billy's ultimate goal is to multiply his kind.
Throughout the show Billy is shown snatching people up and bringing them to the monster to turn them into zombies. Just like some horrifying sex crime. The predator always hunts for it's prey.
The character Eleven comes along with her telekentic powers and penetrates into the mind of Billy. The memory begins on a California beach. Beaches are obvious signs of the unconscious. Like in the scene in Inception directed by Christopher Nolan, the beach symbolizes the unconscious. The actor Leonardo DiCaprio wakes up on the beach after penetrating multiple minds and dreams and hits the very bottom of his inception journey. This to me feels like a good symbol since in our evolutionary track we all had to climb out of the sea to start life on land. It might be at that moment we developed the lizard brain.
Okay, so Eleven sees Billy's childhood memory on the beach. He is with his mother who is a beautiful, blonde lady with a large hat. Then suddenly we see Billy's father step in and begin to beat the mother! Joseph Campbell calls this the ogre father. And so Billy's psyche is damaged and destroyed by this. leading Billy to have the inability to reach rationality because of how horrifying his traumatic childhood is. A person always struggles to become a well adjusted adult after going through that kind of abuse. Later we find that the mother leaves Billy all alone to the abusive father. Shattering any hope that Billy would have with a happy life with his mother. This is probably why Billy looked for a relationship with the motherly Mrs. Wheeler who is much older. Some user on tiktok called that moment 'mommy issues' and that's pretty much that.
In the last moments Billy is given back his identity and mind. Flushed with the calling of his little sister Max, Billy rebels against the monsters hold over his mind. In his last heroic moment he fights against the monster, his former master. Like an honorable human being Billy protects the weak and vulnerable.
In the end Billy dies at the claws of the monster. After sacrificing so much time and energy, Billy meets mother nature's final card. Death.
